When I first saw an ad for a Hash product, it was in Dec of '92. I
originally purchased Playmation ver 1.47 from Anjon & Associates. Even paying
for two-day UPS it still took 8 days to get my software. I wasn't notified
about ver 1.48 – I found about about it by accident 5 months after I bought it.
What was really irratating was that 1.48 was available 1 month after I bought
1.47. Anjon then charged me $50 for the upgrade because there had been a new
manual printed. When I upgraded to AM in January '94, I again ordered from
Anjon and paid for 2 day UPS. It took 10 days to get it, and after all my
questions and specifics, Anjon had Hash send me the Mac version. It was too
late in the day to call Anjon, so I called Hash and talked to Marshall. He had
me send the Mac version back and sent me the PC version. Then the dongle fried
both of my parrallel ports and my serial port. I treid 3 different I/O cards,
and although the dongle presented no problems, my mouse would not work with
with any of the I/O cards. So I called Hash again, and, lucky for me, I live in
Portland, just on the other side of the river, an easy 20 minute drive over to
Hash. I was coming from work and did not have the software with me. I met
Martin and Marshall, and Martin showed me the Chips Ahoy cookie commercial that
Will Vinton had just completed to be aired for the first time during the
Superbowl, and a few other videos that users had sent in. Marshall went and got
me an entire new software package, plus an envelope with the postage already on
it to send back the other package. Martin told me that no one had reported
anything like that happening before, but I had checked with some people and
found that it is not at all unusual for a copy protection dongle to cause
problems. Martin told me that if I had any more problems, to come back and he
would give me hardware off of his own computer that would work. And that from
now on, I could order the software from Hash directly instead of betting the
hassle from Anjon.
These guys didn't know me from Adam, but they still trusted me to be
honest and to also send back $700 dollars worth of software. Well, what I
didn't tell them was that the dongle doesn't allow me to use the parrallel port
at 3F8, but I fixed that by buying a high-speed serial/parrallel port card for
my modem.
In case you don't anything about Hash, they are not a very large company,
in the sense that they do not have very many employees. There is no secretary
or receptionist that I know of. I suspect that at times the programmers have to
handle tech support calls. You are also dealing with a company that is trying
to keep users happy on the PC, Mac, Amiga, and SGI. But give these people time
and they will get you taken care of.
