PMFJI, but I think I can solve two of your problems.

Just move the pivot point to the place you want to translate/rotate from. You
can always move the pivot back to its original place ( true, this is another
step, but not that big of a deal, IMO).

Simply clone your selection then, while the new section is still highlighted,
press 1 2 or 3 to 'mirror' it on the x,y or z axis.
