Al, Thanks for the comments on independent contractor versus employee status and its bearing on ownership of intellectual property developed during the course of the relationship. The situation in publishing is a little different in that it is customary for the publisher to receive, explicitly or implicitly, an exclusive license. Some years ago, I edited my law school's Law Review and I often had the unpleasant task of explaining to authors that they would have to sign MY license agreement if they wanted to be published in the journal. As I mentioned, I actually discussed the matter with Lanny before publication. Although we have no definite understanding, I would not allow a republication without his permission as well. Nathan
