If petroleum becomes tar on exposure to air, that only means that air has something that reacts with the petroleum to thicken it into tar. And it further shows that the petroleum was never in contact with air before. It doesn't say anything about how long the petroleum was in the rocks, sealed away from the air. Jon W.
