I have no experience with the EVS-3000 so I can't comment about it. I use a single SLV-R5UC as my record deck and the VX3 as my source deck. The full VM that I have has absolutely no problem controlling this combination and performs both video and/or audio inserts without a hitch (left, right or both channels). As far as I know, the VM Lite should also perform this function without a problem. I believe the only difference is that the VM LIte does not have the alpha channel capabilities that the full VM does but does have all of the identical deck drivers and controls. For both the R5UC and VX3, VM uses Sony's RCTC both on the source and the record decks. The preferred mode of operation with VM studio is to prestripe your output tapes and then only use insert editing. VM makes this a very painless task. VM will also do assembly edits but I've only every tried it once. I have no experience with any other editors other than VM so I can't compare but I would highly recommend VM as a good choice.
