#Floppy Read Errors
Over the last few months I've been getting occasional read errors on my
floppy drives. At first it seemed to be only the external drive, but last
week it happened on the internal. The strange thing is that most of the time
it has happened on loading programs from a disk which had been working
perfectly. I get an error message, then I retry many times and it goes away.
Later, the same disk will load the same program many times with no sign of
trouble. It did happed once during a write and trashed the floppy it was
writing to. I recovered most of the files with disk salvage.
I would think that if it was alignment, the problem would occur more
frequently. It's really strange that I can use the same disk for weeks with
no problems, then get an error which won't go away without 6 or more retries,
then the next day the same disk reads normally. Could the 8520 I/O chip be
the problem? Has anyone else had this type of problem? I had thought the
problem was with my external drive, but now it's happened on the internal as
well.
Also, I have tried removing & reinserting the disk when the error message
appeared, but that didn't help either. I'm using Fuji disks since this brand
has been OK in the past.
Any help or suggestion would be appreciated! Thanks!
