I could go on and on about absolutely atrocious rags, hyphenation that defied both English and algorithmic logic, widows, orphans, and so on. Worse, photo boxes drawn with four single rules–none of which butted–and then capped with another, green, rule which was a full 1/32" away from the box it was uspposed to butt up against. And during the week it took their "freelance designer" to create this masterpiece, she'd call me at least daily to find out how to do such and so. My bitch isn't that the freelancer is going to get money that we used to get for typesetting–by the time we separated it, sorted it out, waded through the six diskettes (!) the designer sent in, imaged the ten pages (twice, with film overlays), we've charged a *lot* of money. In fact, almost as much as it cost to have us set Issue #1 from the get-go. BTW, I laid out, set and imaged Issue #1 myself, in PageMaker, in less than eight hours. That took one PageMaker file, one FreeHand file, and the FreeHand.EPS file, totalling about 600K. Tonight's abortion totalled 31 files; 3.2 megabytes. And it absolutely looked like hell. [More]
