Somehow I had this fantasy of continuing my typesetting business after my
son was born March 1989. HAH! I had live-in help for a month (very rough
pregnancy – toxemia) while I recuperated, but even so I was back at the
computer the day I can home from the hospital. My office is in a separate
building from the house, across the driveway over the garage, so the only
time I can work is when Ian is napping (three hours per day) or in the
evening after he is asleep. What a disillusionment! So I let the business
slide for now and only kept several choice accounts. The worst part is,
when I tell people I closed the business when Ian was born, they ask "Why?
Don't you work at home?" Needless to say, most of the inquirers are either
men or childless women. I will say, though, that our Panasonic business
phone system was well worth the investment (around $2000 for system &
phones) because it allows us to intercom to anywhere in the house (is Ian
awake yet), and, when he gets to be older, we can electronically block
calls to selected exchanges, area codes, numbers, etc. Very handy!
