How's this for a "definative" answer…the dictionary:
Dog..A domesticated carnivorous quadruped of many varities, the
so-called 'Canis familiaris'; any animal belonging to the same family,
'Canidae', which includes the wolves, jackals, and foxes.
Wolf..Any of several wild carnivorous mammals of the genus 'Canis'.
as in 'C. nubilus', the gray wolf of N. America, or 'C. lupus', the common
European wolf, belonging to the dog family.
