Steve,
Actually I have a pretty generalized computer consulting practice. I
research, recommend, purchase (if requested by client), install, configure
(hardware/software), train, troubleshoot, program, handhold, advise, and
manage.
That sounds like a lot of ground to cover, but I do most of the stuff on
the software side. Hardware repair I leave to others.
As it happens, I just like graphics software. I do use it in creating
brochures, flyers, announcements, etc., but any important design stuff I
leave to a "real" designer. I've fooled around and have been told I have a
good eye, but don't do anything really serious. I'm just fascinated with
the technology and being able to edit and refine an image without erasing
and redrawing is, for me, a more beautiful form of the text edit functions
a computer has.
Besides I used to do print brokering way back when, and my father was a
commercial artist for 30+ years. My sister is currently a commercial
artist, so I guess the interest runs in the blood. So I understand a good
deal of the lingo for camera ready work. Right now, though, I'm looking
for something better than PC Paintbrush that comes with the Microsoft Mouse
so I can hone some skill at this. It never hurts to know how these things
work in case a client asks. And someday soon I want to self-publish a
limited edition book.
