C++ Question
Thanks for the info about C++ books. Your book sounds like what I'm looking
for. I'll check back the first part of May. Unfortunately, I won't be able to
do any actual programming. My personal computer is an Atari ST which is far
down most developers list of platforms to port. I wish IBM had chosen the
68000 CPU family for their line of PC's instead of the 808x. I develop mainly
on a VAX at work, sometimes on a PC compatible but they are not the target.
Besides, my company is far from state-of-the-art and considers using C (which
I have been using exclusively for last few years) to being on the cutting
edge. Much as I had to admit it, it is probably only a matter of time before I
purchase an IBM compatible. I've been pretty proud of the fact that I have
been programming professionally for 15 years now and have never written a
program to run on an IBM and have used IBM's at all only minimally.
I would consider the Mac, but in a horrible ironic twist of fate it has
appeared of late that IBM (the PC part) and Apple have had a personality
interchange. IBM, previously known for jealously guarding their secrets,
opened their PC hardware and software for the world to see and for independent
developers to work with. Meanwhile, Apple (while still under Jobs) decided to
close up the Mac – a philosophy in direct contradiction the original Apple
design that got them where they were. The ulitimate expression of this, of
course, was having the gall to sue other companies over the use of an idea
which they got from someone else and which have been originally designed with
the hope that it would indeed become a defacto standard interface for all
computers.
