Actually, Tripp, I believe that a number of companies *have* simply knocked
off others fonts and brought them to market. The problem they've had is
one of distribution and credibility – would you buy Times from somebody
else if it was called "Acme Clockwork" and you knew nothing about the
company? Fonts are important enought that I think most people will stick
with a known entity.
The other problem for knockoff companies has been the *cost* of duplicating
fonts – prior to the introduction of Earl's Metamorphosis, I believe they'd
have to print a font large, scan it, trace it with Illustrator, and then
save that. And then they'd have to re-create from scratch the kerning
tables. Very time comsuming…
