What keeps WordPerfect in the "wordprocessor" rather than "editor" category is is, of all things, its line length limit! You are correct that it can operate upon a file which is much, much bigger than memory (but watch out for "disk full" messages, because it can require a disk scratch area twice as big as the file being edited). However, version 4.1 has a hard-coded line length limit of 250 characters. That means any verbose stuff gets a soft-return inserted. Also, WordPerfect can get grumpy about non-alphanumeric characters in the file. Though one can learn to read [HRt][TAB][BOLD] as easily as hex, the lookup table is not standard. 🙂
