From my experience, for very simple text files, the PostScript processor in
a RIP3 can process as fast as the Lino 300 can image, so the slowest point
in the chain is the imagesetter engine. For "average" and for
graphics-computation-intensive files PostScript files, the Lino's processor
is the part of the link that slows things down. But when you have large
image files (>5 Mb), as is frequently the case when you're separating
continuous tone photos, you also lose time in transmission. (At LocalTalk
speeds, it can take 10-15 minutes per separation just to transmit the
data.)
Up to this point with our setup, we've saved time only on
Ethernet-connected Mac to Mac file transfers or Mac to Novell file server
transfers. We've been waiting for the Ethernet upgrade for the Lino RIPs
forever it seems…we've hoping for delivery next month, if we're lucky. So
I can't give you actual times of Mac to Lino transfers, but Lino quotes
figures like 30% to 40% time savings on large image files.
I don't remember the cost of the Lino RIP upgrade. We ordered in September
at Seybold when it was announced, and I think I heard that the price had
been upped since then.
