The type of ram that the GVP 030 card uses are SIMM's, but not the type
Apple uses[page], rather they are nybble-mode mem chips, designed
specifically for utilizing the 030's burst mode, and intruction cache.
GVP's 030 *can* be expanded up to 8 megs, in 4 meg increments *only*. It's
either 4 or 8 if you own one of these babies…
It is also an asynchronous design (as opposed to the Ronin/Imtronics
Hurricane design), and since it's mpu can be run clocked at a different
freq. han the Amiga's clock, will not have the problems associated with
using genlock supplied external clock signals of possible dubious quality,
and synchronous accelerators.
As for the "switch" dis/enable, there were some very good reasons for GVP
using this approach, rather than software disabling. I don't fully recall
why off hand although I see if I can dig up the text file explaining why
they did this (Someto do with AMIX, although I'm not certain).-Rick
