Bill – If you're overprinting BLACK, is better to NOT reverse out athe background. If you're overprinting another color, you have to reverse out the background to avoid color shifts. One of the trick that film houses use to get really good black backgrounds is to run 70% cyan behind it — it makes it MUCH blacker. If you are overprinting on an obvious pattern (like stripes) then you have to reverse out the background, or it will show through even black. — don
