#AFM files
Does anyone know if the font metrics (AFM) files that
are shipped with PostScript type are used for anything?
When Adobe first started shipping their type for the Mac,
AFM files were sketchily referred to as something that
high-end publishing programs would use to produce
hi-q type. But are they really being used? For what,
and by what programs? I know what they contain, but
my understanding is that this stuff is present in the
font files themselves.
I have been trying to find an answer to this topic for a while,
but I can't seem to get one that rings true. Any help would be
appreciated.
