Three questions please…
I have newly purchased copy of SB Pro – Amiga
(1) The default "Labels" layout is not useful to me, is there any way I
can store the one that does work (e.g. parameters ?) so that it comes up
each time I call for labels ?
(2) Where is "Appendix K" ? mentioned in docs but not in hardcopy (that I
can find) or in read.me file(s). It is supposed to tell me how to set the
startup parameters in the ICON info.
(3) I am starting SBPro from Workbench. Originally I had all my SB stuff
in a directory on HD named SB. Had to open DH0:, open Sb, then dbl-click
icon. So I moved the SB program Icon out to DH0: and also moved the
parameters file to DH0:. Now, when I start SB I get everything OK EXCEPT
the CLI output screen whaps on top of everything… its a simple matter to
move it to back but I wonder if I am doing something wrong ?

1) You cannot save label parameters in SBPro.
2) Look in the Appendix "Superbase on the Amiga".
3) This I can't figure out. Try copying the SUPERBASE.PAR file again to
DH0: and see if that fixes it.

You are incorrect in referring me to Appendix J "SuperBase on the Amiga".
It does not contain any information about TOOL TYPES.
The READMEFirst.Doc file very briefly notes some new "tooltypes" including
"SCREEN=LACE" to run WBPro on an interlaced screen – the implication is
that there are others, my startup Icon actually has some included – but I
cannot find ANY documentation of these.
The READMEFirst.Doc file specifically references "Appendix K" for
information on "Tool Types". It is not in either of my SBPro manuals.
So – can you find it for me and either get me a hardcopy or upload it here
(presumably others might miss it).
I apologise if I am missing this somehow but the only thing after Appendix
J in my manual is the Index…

To set your SCREEN resolution, here are your options for the tool types:
SCREEN=LACE 640×400 resolution SCREEN=WORKBENCH whatever resolution WB
is in SCREEN=CUSTOM brings up a custom screen

I appreciate your specific response but that is not my question, I don't
care, specifically about the LACE=WORKBENCH tooltype…
I want to know WHERE the documentation of this AND OTHER "tooltype" stuff
is since my READMEFirst!.Doc file says its in Appendix K and my manual
contains no such appendix.
I do not wish to spend bucks over and over here on CIS to get each
"tooltype" explained to me by you after I discover that it exists… for
instance my SBPro icon AS SHIPPED BY PRECISION, has two other tooltypes set
up, SYSTEM=PANEL|SCROLL|SIZE and RETURN=ON…
I want YOU or someone at Precision to find out if Appendix K exists. If it
does then please arrange for me to get one. If not then please say so and
update your READme file.
PLEASE check YOUR Amiga Manual and YOUR readme file.
ps – the READMEFIRST!.Doc file also references the apparent fact that all
these tooltypes have Command line startup equivalents (e.g. sbpro -l for
the LACE option)… presumably this is also in appendix K.

Yes, there is an appendix K, but in the third edition of the manual. What
edition do you have? (Look on the very first page near the top under the
address.) We have 3 editions of the Pro manuals, all of which have
corrections and changes. That's why you don't have an appendix K. If you
have a specific quesiotn about tool types, please ask me.
I've looked at the read_me file. If you have te first edition of the
manual, look in Appendix J, Amiga Start Options. If you have the third
edition, look in Appendix K, Superbase Start Options.
I'll say it before Daryl does; Appendix J does not mention tool types at
all. I have the 2nd edition, and the only mention I can find anywhere is
the readme file, which does refer you to Appendix K, which I ain't got. Oh
well.
Frankly I think Daryl is pressing the ToolTypes question too much; better
for you folks to just admit that you made a mistake, and Appendix K is not
there for many of us, and to post here the contents of it (or mail to those
who request, etc). I know I've had to call Borland a LOT of times about
ambiguities/errors in their manuals on Paradox, so I can forgive little old
'Precision, if you rectify the mistake 🙂
But I'd much rather see the ARexx examples you are talking about. How
about posting some of them? –jp–seattle–
See Daryl's message #21979 for info on Appendix K: it's in the 3rd Edition
of the SBPro manual. As for getting a hold of this 3rd edition, I'd not
recommend going thru the bother as SB4 Amiga will be available by the end
of the month or shortly thereafter, and its manual is entirely new from
page one thru the end.

I am only "pressing" for what you have also requested – that P simply post
or send out the info (since I DON'T KNOW what the tooltypes (and CLI
startup options are I CANNOT KNOW what I might be missing viz features).
I too stand ready to forgive "little old" precision, same IF tho.

2nd edition! I just bought SBPro and I got the 1st edition. Any significant
differences? The version number is 3.02

Well, you've got a more recent version than I do! My version number shows
as 3.01 (01-Sept-88). Maybe I should ask you if there are any significant
differences!
My manual is 2nd edition, tho. Maybe they count up on the software version
numbers, and down on the manual version numbers? 🙂
Well, with 4.0 out soon I'll just wait for that.

Although I bought my SBPro 2 months ago I find my manual is Second Edition.
My dealer (from whom I bought my Amiga 5 years ago) has a history of doing
this… nevertheless I would expect Precision to update the correct info
easily enuff in the README file.
Since I received essentially NO information on tooltypes and CLI startup
parameters in the Precision-supplied packages I would like to know :
(a) what are ALL the tooltypes options and ALL possible parameters for each
option
(b) what are ALL the CLI startup parameters, their usage format and their
meanings.
Do I sound too demanding ? This is (currently) the most expensive single SW
package I have bought for my Amiga.. I am pretty happy with it but this
HOLE in the Precision supplied docs needs filling, please.

Here are the CLI start options:
SBPRO [-c] [-r] [-fformname] [-p] [-s] [-z] [-l]
-c Selects custom screen -r Disables returns (ASCII 13) when writing
to disk files -f Loads form at startup time -p Removes control panel
-s Removes scroll bars form Superbase window -z Removes sizing gadget
and disable sizing -l Select interlace mode on a custom screen
NOTE: Remember to set the stack to at least 8000 before running Superbase.
Here are the tool types:
SCREEN = WORKBENCH | CUSTOM | LACE RETURN = ON | OFF Enable/Disable
returns SYSTEM NOPANEL | NOSCROLL | NOSIZE
The tool types are explained above with the CLI options. They are the same.
That's all the startup info for the Amiga.

Perhaps by now your tool-types questions are resolved, but here's a little
input anyway.
Alice said, "Curiouser and curiouser". MY manual (Volume 1, Database &
Text Editor, SuperBase Professional) says it's First Edition, November
1988, and:
1) Appendix J is "Amiga Start Options, and DOES explain tool types;
2) Appendix K is >present< and is "SuperBase on the Atari-ST", and
3) Appendix L is "SuperBase on the Amiga".

NOPE – so far I have not had any satisfactory (e.g complete)
"documentation" of the Amiga TOOLTYPES options or the CLI startup
options… in my four messages to Precision here.
Odd on the EDITIONS since mine is SECOND EDITION but dated SEPTEMBER 1987
(14 months before your FIRST edition ???) My dealer (MicroWorks in
Buffalo) has a history of this kind of crap, since I bought my Amiga from
him 5 years ago – like a fool I decided to spend the extra $40-odd bucks to
by SBPro from him instead of M.O. cuz I feel guilty about the few MO
purchases I've made in the past years and I hate to see the AMI dealer
network shrinking like it is – but this kind of selling old stuff stinks.
(He's even got an old copy of PageSetter I still on the shelves next to the
"upgradeed PS II – even tho I was fraught with bugs). (He's also apparently
got his own shrink-wrap machine to re-pack returns or somesuch). (And he
'declines' to open packages to demo them)… so I got a shrink-wrapped 1987
set of docs.
I'm not really unhappy with my SBpro, tho it is the most expensive Ami pkg
I've bought in 5 years – and when I sent in my regist $10 to go dongle-free
version I assume I got current SW version – but Precision (here) has been
as clunky as my dealer in responsiveness.
I have Appendix I which is ATARI-ST and Appendix J which is "Superbase on
Amiga) but no K and no "Start Options" or "tooltypes"…

My personal suggestion would be to put everything BACK in its directory,
and try doing the following:
1. Create the following script, name it "sb", put it in your s: directory,
and set its script bit ("Protect s:sb +s")
2. Type "sb" in any CLI window.
The script: CD DH0:SuperBase
Run DH0:SuperBase/sbpro -c -l

I expect I'll do that since I cannot get that "up front" CLI output screen
to go away… since I'm in an iconizing mood right now I would go one step
further and attach the script to an Xicon.

By now you have your information. I write only to "de-propagate" an error
I wrote earlier, namely putting BOTH -c and -l in the startup — if you
ONLY put -c you get a 640X200 custom screen, while if you ONLY put -l you
still get a custom screen, 640X400. you don't need both (tho it don't seem
to hurt…)
