#CD ROM Question.

Have been monitoring the mail on this subject. Most interesting and
instructive. My desire for CD ROM is still unquenched! BUT…. would like
the means of tapping the fast growing MS/DOS number of disks. As far as the
future of Amiga CD ROM is concerned…. well… I'm still waiting for the
new chips and Workbench.
Just a thought. If I get an "interboard" for our 2000 – which permits it
to use MS/DOS, can I then stick a CD ROM drive on to it – so that I can use
MS/DOS CD's ? – or is that VERBOTEN!!! (Technically I mean). Gazing to
the sky… perhaps then I could attach a second CD ROM reader which would
play the Amiga version. Would I then have the best of the two computer
worlds.
Please keep going on this question. I am learning from the responses.

I have never used the bridge board or similar products for IBM hardware
emulation but they must be able to access the Amiga's SCSI disc port.
Therefore I would assume that if you where to run MS-DOS with the MS CD ROM
extensions installed for the drive you have you should be able to access
the drive and data. Anyone try it yet?

Nope…at least not as you think Chris. While the BridgeBoard can
share an Amiga drive (thus access the SCSI bus)….it doesn't do it
directly. What the BridgeBoard accesses on the AMiga drive is a *file* on
the drive…that particular file is laid out like a complete MS-DOS
filesystem. Thus, to access a CD ROM drive on the Amiga's bus…the CD ROM
drive would have to look to the Amiga as a simple AmigaDOS file…which
isn't possible at this time.
However, I see no reason why you couldn't hook an MS-DOS CD ROM
with appropriate controller card to the BridgeBoard and thus use it
directly by the BridgeBoard.

Yes that would be the solution. Don does the same thing apply to products
such as ATonce which looks like it plugs into the processor socket?

My strong suspicion is no, ATonce couldn't use an Amiga CD-ROM
drive as an MS-DOS CD-ROM drive. However, I do not know that for sure.

If you can add SCSI harddrives to the BB (and I think you can, using one of
the PC slots), why not a SCSI controller with a CD-ROM player? You would
still need the PC CD-ROM player drivers to "see" the player, but it might
work. For instance, the NEC PC Interface consists of a SCSI controller and
driver s/w for their CD-rOM players.

Yes, with a BridgeBoard…you can use an IBM type CD-ROM with the
appropriate controller…however with the ATonce…I'm not so sure.
