A friend of mine was told that the Amiga 2000 with the 2090 Controler board could only use 20 megs of a 30 meg st-506 type hard drive. This doen't sound correct to me, anyone know for sure. >>Steve.

Your friend is correct if he means that you can only use 20 megs of a 30 meg drive, but only if that drive is RLL and only if it is hooked to the ST506 interface. It can be used to its full capacity on the SCSI interface with a suitable adapter (an RLL one… Adaptek 4070 is one I think). Regards, Larry.

Steve, RLL stands for 'RUN LENGTH LIMITED', and refers to an encoding scheme for writing the nits to the disk surface. The technique allows you to put 50% more data on the same surface area. Yes, an RLL drive with suitable adapter will run and give you full capacity on the SCSI port. Regards, Larry.

Steve If you get a 30 meg drive that doesn't require RLL to get 30 megs when used on an IBM, it will also get 30 megs on the Amiga through the ST506 port on the 2090 controller. Only a drive which requires RLL formatting to get it's specified 30 megs will be limited to 20 megs on the 2090's ST506 port. Claude
