#A2090 woes

I'm having problems PREPing my Conner CP-340 using the A2090 controller. I did this a long time ago, after much hand-wringing over what the specs REALLY were on this Apple-customized version. Now, I can't get it to prep even though I know what the correct mountlist is. The drive activity LED connected to the A2090 shows activity, but I don't hear the drive accessing (from what I can tell, the CP340's pretty quiet) and it returns a "Drive not PREPed" line after the process. I entered in the specs as I know them during the PREP process, even tried some alternatives. Nothing seems to help. What gives? Thanks in advance for any helpful hints. + Phil +

Phil, You won't hear the drive accessing…they are VERY quiet drives. I've got two of them, never had a problem PREP'ing them…so perhaps I can help a bit. This may sound silly, but did you mount the correct RESx: partition? And is that what you attempted to PREP (the RESx: partition)? Don

I believe I tried to prep the 'Res2:' partition, which is the first SCSI drive. Is there any special requirement for the startup sequence? I saw someone else mention around these parts something about putting binddrivers first in the s-s after setpatch. Do I have to mount res2: before PREPing it? Unfortunately, due to the horrible C= docs, the fact that my 2090 disk somehow corrupted itself sitting in the disk storage, and my lack of memory of all the machinations that I went through to get this combo to work the first time, I forgot the procedure. Hehe, that's what I get for selling my old hardware to friends! + Phil +

Phil, Yes, BindDrivers should come near the start of the startup-sequence, but it's not absolutely necessary….very definately after the SetPatch. Yes, you have to mount res2:, make sure your mountlist entry shows Unit # of 3 for res2:. The other thing is that the CP340's that were designed for the Mac's don't have terminator resistors on them…you have to externally terminate the SCSI bus. And, the SCSI ID jumpers are reversed from what you'd think. All 3 jumpers on is SCSI ID of 0, which would relate to Unit #3 for the 2090 (res2:). Do not put a jumper on E1. Don

As I recall, I didn't change any SCSI address numbers, so they should still be correct. As for the terminator, I was using another drive to terminate the bus originally, but she doesn't have the drive. I bought a 'passthrough' SCSI terminator on sale (it's the one with one female on one side, and one male on the other side) and put it on the output of the drive. I just discovered the other day, that apparently you are supposed to use those things by passing the SCSI input THROUGH them…perhaps that is one of my problems.
