500 Upgrade help needed
4 messages in this thread
Good Day!
I have an amiga 500, with 1Meg (A501) and one external drive. I am
interested in upgrading, and would like your input. I have need to be IBM
Compatible, (for work purposes) and have a hard drive. I am interested
about the internal systems but am worried about heat, and compatibility
(there is only so much room in a 500!).
What about the differances between the ATonce and PC-Power board, any
problems with either? All I will be running for now is Office Writer on
the PC side.
Looks more like External HD system may be best. What about IDE and SCSI
pros and cons?
Any and ALL opinions are welcome and *GREATLY* appreciated!

Ken:
It sounds like you have several areas that nedd to be addressed at once:
Hard Drive/Host adapter, memory, pc compatability. With that in mind, you
should probably give serious consideration to a solution from GVP that will
let you handle all of this in one neat package.

Thanks Michael, I have been looking around and have recently seen more info
on the GVP with thier PC Board. Still a little pricey for me but
definately look promising!

You might consider GVP's Series II HD+ for the 500. They have a board for
it called the PC286 that plugs onto the mini-slot of the SII HD+. All you
need then is more memory (easy to add on the GVP up to 8 megs) and a
version of MSDOS. The only thing I haven't been able to tell from the
advertisements is whether the PC286 can make and use a partition on the
Hard drive. Anyone know?
