I have many gigabytes of proprietary data for which I need a new storage
medium. The data has to be brought online quickly in chunks of 100-500 MB,
so tape archives are not acceptable.
Are there read/write CD-ROM drives on the market? An ideal solution would
be to create a series of CDROMs in this office that other offices could
access with their standard $500 CD drives. Since most of the discs would
exist in qty 2 or 3, we don't want to put a lot of money into mastering.
Our current storage medium is WORM – $3500 a drive and $75 / 100MB cost for
the media. I should think if the CD technology is available it would not
take long to become cost effective.

Jeffrey, Today, a device to write a single CD cost about $25,000. The
media costs about $40.00 There are new units comming onto the market this
year that should cost much less. Owen.
