#Data Diskman

Sony announced a successor to the Data Discman, the Bookman Portable CD-ROM
XA. It will use "normal" size CD-ROMs, has a larger screen (320 x 200 mono)
and MS-DOS 3.x in ROM. Delivery Fall 1992. Priced around $1,000. Color
video output. QWERTY keyboard.
Thanks for the rundown. I can't believe I'm so out of it that Sony has
released successor to a product that I hadn't even heard of until very
recently. The price is what I was most curious about. My wife is a
reference librarian, so I can use that in my favor should I need to bargain
with her to purchase it;-). Thanks.

Kevin,
The Bookman is NOT a replacement for the Data Discman. Sony was very
worried that it would be percieved as such. The two products are similar in
that they both are hand held CDROM readers. However, the differences in
physical size, disk size, screen size/resolution, and basic capabilities
are VAST. eg. the DDm has a dedicated search/retrieval engine while the
Bman is basically a handheld DOS machine.
The DDm has been a big seller for Sony and while the Bookman will impact
its sales, there will still be a market for the little brother.
