#ZModem Implementation

Hi There! I was just wondering when CompuServe plans to add ZModem to the
list of protocols? I use a 9600 baud modem, and the reduced overhead of
ZModem would greatly decrease my connect time. What do you think of my
efforts at digitization?

CompuServe will probably never use Zmodem for a variety of reasons. The
biggest reason is that it's unneeded — B+ protocol is as fast, if not
faster than Zmodem on packet switched networks (ie, CIS). It offers
resumable file transfers. What it doesn't give you is batch downloads —
but that can easily be had with an automated navigational program.
By that logic, they shouldn't offer xmodem, ymodem, or any other
protocol…B+ is better than all of them. But not every software package
supports B+.

For the Amiga (and just off the top of my head), Access!, BackTalk, JRComm,
Online, Whap!, NComm, Term, VLT, Baud Bandit, VTX On-Line, and no doubt
many more that I didn't think of or know about, support B series protocols.
NComm does not support B; at least my copy (v. 1.92) does not. Is there a
more recent one?

NComm supports XPR libraries, therefore it supports QB. The current
version of NComm is 2.0.

Also, TComm programs that support XPR (external protocol) libraries will
support B+, which has an XPR library available here on CompuServe. Thus
you should add A-Talk III to the list.

Sorry 'bout forgetting ATalk — last time I played with it it didn't
support XPR. Is there a B+ library available? I know there are a couple of
QuickB libraries about (the best one by Keith Young of Access! fame —
that's the one that distributed with Backtalk) but I wasn't aware of a B+
library.
I was told there is a B+ XPR library here on CompuServe. If it isn't here,
I'll need to get the one Marco Papa is using and upload it here.

The CompuServe QuickB and B+ protocols are at least as fast as ZModem. Why
not use them?

Thank you for the suggestion Betty. Unfortunately, up to now I have been
using ATALK III and it does not have either B protocols. I have however
just got a hold of WHAP! and I believe that supports the B protocols. So
as soon as I get it up and running, I hope to get the most out of my
software and hardware.

The lastest version of Atalk III utilizes XPR protocol — so you do have
access to QuickB protocol with Atalk.

Thank you for the information. I checked my ATalkIII master disks and
discovered the protocol. I have now copied it to my hard disk, and will be
trying it out.

The latest version of ATalkIII does have the B+ protocol included and the
upgrade is very reasonably priced. You can get more info from Oxxi on the

Whap! does, indeed, support QuickB, so that should work out fine.
Atalk, however, supports the X"PR libraries, and there is an xpr library
for QuickB – maybe even one for B+. Have you looked at those?

Thank you for the information. I discovered the XPR protocol on my ATALKIII
master disk and have set it up. I will try it out the next time I do some
uploading or downloading.
