I am a new subscriber of CompuServe.
My computer is Macintosh, but I am interested in viewing some graphics
files in this forum. Is it possible to see pictures on the Mac?
I have "PhotoShop", an application software, and it has capability of
viewing GIF, IFF and TIFF format etc. However, it can't read *.LZH files.
What does LZH stand for? If there is any program to convert LZH to GIF or
IFF, please tell me and help me.

Koji, the .LZH extension on a file means the file has been compressed to
take up less space on Compuserve and less time for you to download. You
will need a utility to uncompress those files before you can view them with
your viewing program. Once uncompressed you should be able to view most
pictures here with PhotoShop. What you need to do is go to the Macintosh
forums and see if they have a file which will allow you to unarc LHARC
files. LHARC is the Amiga utility which creates the .LZH extension
compressed files. Hope this helps,

The .LZH indicatates a compressed archive file created with LHARC. It's
similar to .SIT Stuffit files on the Mac. I'm fairly certain a program to
extract LHARC archives exists on the Mac: You could ask the sysops in the
Mac forums about that.
Now, with Photoshop, you can view some IFF images on the Mac. Things you
*won't* be able to view include those labeled as HAM-E, DCTV, SHAM, Dynamic
HAM, and Dynamic Hires, almost certainly. I have no idea whatsoever if
Photoshop can correctly view HAM or Extra Halfbrite images. (Many of the
files here, especially the ones in LIB 9, "Derived Art", are in HAM
format…) I have heard a rumor that the most recent revision of Photoshop
can view IFF 24 bit images, but earlier versions cannot. So you might want
to read the description carefully before downloading.

NO version 2.0, the newest of Photoshop can't read IFF24 as of now. BUT it
does read HAM now so you should be able to view it. +For IFF24 stuff, I
think more of the 24bit graphics file are archived with JPEG now so, you
should have no problem there too…

Look in the Mac forums for a program called Lharc.
I forget the exact name for the program, but if you look for it using LHARC
as a search word, you'll find it, I downloaded it for a Mac using friend
once. There is a version of it there for the Mac. Lharc is popular among
the Amiga, and MS Dos crowd, because it is very efficient, (I've heard from
Mac using friends that it creates an archive that is a little tighter than
SIT). I believe PhotoShop will view the garden variety ILBM files produced
by the Amiga, but I am not sure about the HAM (Hold And Modify) mode
pictures that many here produce.
