Most of the animators here are interested in getting their animations out
to videotape, and that's a subject that demands a great deal of knowledge
and experience. We can thank Kevin Krell of CSA (and I already have,
profusely) for sharing his expertise with us.
At some point, however, you'll also be interested in bring video INTO your
computer–what then? The solution that I've discovered is the Jovian Logic
SuperVIA and Gloria boards. Running Jovian's new Audio Visual Link
software, the SuperVIA video capture board and Gloria audio board allow you
to capture highly quality video sequences complete with 16-bit CD-quality
audio. Software-only video compression is supported in the form of an
Animator flic built on the fly (or on the fli). So far, I've used these
products to capture the famous Energize-the-Metal-Babe sequence from Fritz
Lang's Metropolis (1926), and add Bach's famous Toccata and Fugue for pipe
organ. I can play the result back over the native PC speaker using GRASP.
The result: multimedia for the masses. DVI, eat your heart out. This is
really a new dimension for animators.
