Do you know if there is a Canadian number where I can call to order the Celluar Automata program? I tried the above number and got a voice mail box at 10:55 a.m. EST. Mike: I don't know whether there's a Canadian number. Any of you Autodesk guys know? According to the brochure, 800-688-2344 is supposed to work from Canada. Did you try leaving a message in the voice mail box? Who knows what might turn up! <g> The brochure also lists a fax number: 415-289-4718. Uh-oh – here's another brochure with a different fax number: 415-491-8311. Boy this is confusing…. If all else fails, email me your address and I'll send you one of the brochures, since I have several extras. CA Lab costs $60 ($59.95 for you bean-counters), as does CHAOS: The Software. – Mark M.

Hi Mark, Thanks for the reply. I finally figured out the difference between PST and EST and phoned when they were awake <grin>. I'm beginning to hate voice mail. The way things are going, you can get on the phone and never even talk to a human being. This actually happened to me when I called the University of Toronto to request a calender for my son. After I dutifully pushed all the correct buttons, I received a recorded message telling me to mail 4 bucks to a post office box number. We're now in the process of getting voice mail at work <aaak!> I may never get to talk to a live human being again! We'll just exchanged voice mail messages! In the meantime, I'll be able to play with artificial life forms <grin>. What are the advantages of the Chaos lab over Fractint? – Mike

Mike: Yes, it's a drag when technology abets laziness, mediocrity, and rudeness. Voice mail can be a Good Thing when it's properly designed, but too often it turns into an elaborate and frustrating maze. There's no such thing as "Chaos lab" – "CA Lab" and "CHAOS" are two separate packages. I think CHAOS and Fractint are different enough to make it worth owning both ('specially since the latter is free <g>). There certainly is some overlap, but they take quite distinctive approaches. It's been a while since I've worked much with either, but I recall preferring Fractint for the Mandelbrot and related sets – seems like it was faster. CHAOS definitely has the user interface edge, but Fractint certainly isn't hard to use. I really like CHAOS's other modules, especially Strange Attractors and Magnets and Pendula. – Mark M.
