I have to disagree… I totally enjoyed the show. It was more to true
SCIFI than any other of the current shows. I enjoy DS9 and TNG, but B5
shows much more promise. The aliens are much more enjoyable to watch on
B5 than they are on any of the trek shows. I can't wait to see the
series…

I thought that B5 was kind of bad, and it had *logical* flaws. To wit:
Scene: A businessman uses an Esper to find the truth from a vendor.
Scene: A court *does not* use an Esper to find the truth, although they
certainly could have.
Huh? Bit of a weak link in the plot, I thought.

The individual story told in the two hours (murder mystery) was "OK" I
was intrigued, however, by the underlying story of B5 and it's existence.
The mysteries of the Vorlon empire and especially the weird surrender of
the Minbari empire to the earth alliance. I think there is a bigger story
being told and I can't wait to hear it!

As was explained in the Sci-Fi forum: evidence from an esper is not
allowed in court, somewhat like polygraph machines today. Makes sense to
me but should be explained in the story.

Exactly my point…should have been explained in the story.
I just caught a repeat of ST:TNG, the one where Picard is "invaded" by an
alien probe, and lives a virtual lifetime in 25 minutes…as a member of a
long dead alien race. It was terrific – I actually felt saddened by his
bittersweet experience. After watching that, I know why I felt that B5
was so lackluster.
Of course…I felt the same way about the ST:TNG pilot, too.

I don't think it is fair to compare and episode in a mature show like
STTNG with a pilot movie. I think given time, B5 could be quite
excellent.

There have been some very good TNG episodes but the one you mention is
DEFINITELY my favorite! Stands alongside of a very few outstanding short
stories I have read….and NO other TV shows. That was the second time I
saw it and I taped in HI8 for the archives.
The B5 pilot was a little lackluster in places. The "look" was pretty
cool. The plot and the writing seemed strong enough. Some of the acting
was what seemed lackluster to me. The security chief is a stiff. The
japanese second-in-command was very uneven. The lead guy was good and the
doctor was very good. The Lightwave effects were horrorshow! All in all a
very impressive outing effect-wise.

I did like the idea of going beyond the humanoid form for some of the
aliens. But did you see that guy in the gorilla mask serving drinks – come
on! And the writing was IMHO weak in some scenes. How about the one where
the commander is talking with his girl friend (staying vague here) and
says he didn't want to talk about something, then goes on for a 5 minute
speech detailing every detail of the the event.
I am sure that if it does become a series it will improve as each
character becomes more defined and the show gains an identity. Anyway, my
opinion is no more valuable or insightful than yours, or others. So
everyone should see it and come to their own opinions about B5.

That's right… Everyone has a right to their own opinion and a B5 series
will only do good for the SCIFI community and for TV SCIFI in general. I
think it can potentially give the Toaster and especially the Amiga, much
needed exposure.
