Now that I've done my taxes using AMAX 2.06 and TaxCut (Mac), I'm learning
for the first time that the ImageWriter emulation for AMAX II doesn't work
right. I'm trying to print to an Epson printer and need some help!
In calling Readysoft, they suggested using a program such as MacPrint or
Powerprint. Unfortunately, I've so far only found MacPrint available and
at a cost of close to $100.
Can anyone else suggest how to get the Mac (system 6.x) to print to Epson,
or better still, print to disk? I can get access to a Mac/Laserwriter at
work if I can get the file to disk. Thanks!

It is true that the Epson emulation is compressed unless you print at the
medium quality resolution.
The Mac OS will print a postscript file to disk if you invoke a command
key qualifier when opening the Print dialog (make sure you have selected
the LaserWriter in your Chooser). (Unfortunately, the exact key sequence
escapes me at this moment. Sorry! :^(
I think the combination is either option-K, option-P, Shift-command-P, or
Shift-Command-K. (If you're using 7.x, then I think the finder shortcuts
list the exact key sequence.)
Another option is to take the Tax software & data to a real Mac and print
it from there.

Which Epson printer are you using? I'm using an EPL6000 with great
results. Be sure to turn the emulation switch to none in your AMax prefs.
Look around for closeouts at software shops. I got MacPrint(an older
version) for $10. You don't need the latest.

Thanks for the advice about getting an old verison. That makes sense, I
just hope it doesn't take me too long to find.

You might also try the Mac forums here on CIS. Leave a message asking
about a driver or check the libs yourself. I'm not sure about the LQ but I
think some Epsons will actually emulate the Imagewriter without an
additional driver. Double check your Amax settings, ports etc. and Mac
chooser settings. You might also need to mess around with the dip switches
on the Epson.

Make sure your dip switches on the Epson printer are set correctly. Default
settings solved my problems. Also what EPson are you using? It needs to be
set up for graphics.

PS At work I had to use MacPrint to print to my TI MicroLaser in HP emulation.
The Epson emulation wouldn't work nor would Postscript.
There is a program here on CI$ called AsyncLaserwriter which will allow
you to use a null modem cable to print directly to a LaserWriter… Try
it…

If you can get the printer drivers from System 7, these are usable on
system 6.xx. Just drag the new drivers into the system folder. Then when
you go to print you can select print postscript to file by clicking on the
bullet next to the selection. Unless you have backup copies be sure to
move the older versions first for safekeeping or they'll get overwritten.
You can also print to disk by selecting print, then just after clicking on
the OK button you press and hold down the F key until you see the message,
"Creating Postscript File". If you are going to print this file using a
non-macintosh machine press and hold the K key. This will force the
inclusion of the Apple Laserprep file at the beginning of the file.

PowerPrint is definitely available and works wonderfully. I have been
using it for everything with my citizen printer. I called the number that
came with my AMaxIIPlus for PowerPrint and ordered it directly. I don't
know why they do not advertize more. GDT Softworks Inc., not sure what
phone number I reached but the manual lists the following…604-291-9689
and also lists a compuserve number for technical support for GDT which is
72137,3246.Comes also with a serial to parallel cable. My printing is
exactly as good as a real Mac gives…outstanding graphics, fonts etc. My
entire taxes have been printed out on it. I personally struggled with the
Epson emulator for awhile but there is no comparison with a proper
driver. It does unfortunately cost about $100 but since getting it I have
felt that it absolutely made the AMax and would never recommend doing
without it if you have a non-apple printer.
