Hi, I'm new to the whole system and hope someone can help with how CHAOS looks like when I load if from inside of 3D Studio..It's correcly written into the 3ds.set file in 3DS and CHAOS does appear, however once the first screen with the Autodesk logo leaves I get the menu selection for the different sections..till then the writting is clean, but once inside any of the programs except the last one, the menues and all text is grabbled, but if I then proceed to the last program, it is always Ok and when I go back to the other sections they are now clear.. what's going on.. I've even included CHAOS in the path inside config.sys..

This is not a symptom that happens on my setup. Have you tried running exiting 3D Studio with the F10 (DOS SHELL) command, and then running CHAOS from the command prompt? If so, do you get the same symptoms? I assume that you're running 3DS 2, and that you're loading 3DS with the 3DSSHELL, rather than 3DS command. I wouldn't be surprised if the amount of memory available for running CHAOS was too low, causing this. Any experimenting you can do to create more available memory (in the 640k range) before starting 3DS? Let us know your memory manager settings, and if you have a large amount of commands in your config.sys and autoexec.bat, you might try paring them down. Nik

hi Nik, as for"Have you tried running exiting 3D Studio with the F10 (DOS SHELL) command, and then running CHAOS from the command prompt? If so, do you get the same symptoms?"..Yes exited with F10 and it reacts the same way..first screen clean then all six others show garbled until I enter "toy universes" which is always clean, then when I reenter the other programs they are clear of the bargled instructions.. B:have also run CHAOS from Program pull down while going thru a batch file.. no change.. 2.."you're running 3DS 2, and loading 3DS with 3DSSHELL, rather than 3DS command."… Now in 3ds.2.01A but also had same situation in 3DS 2..also am loading the 3DSSHELL. 3. Problem happened when I was using HIMEM.SYS and EMM386, now I've gone over to QEMM and it still does it, here is config.sys: device=c:\qem\qemm386.sys ram x=E000-EFFF x=B000-B7ff diskbuf=2 DOS=high, umb DEVICE=C:\QEM\LOADHI.SYS /R:1 C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE DEVICE=C:\VGAUTIL\MOUSE.SYS FILES=10 Buffers=1 stacks=0,0 shell=c:\command.com /e:286 /p DEVICE=c:\tplus\targap.sys b0 i220 me r1 w1 s1 d4" and finally here is the Autoexec.bat: c:\qem\loadhi /r:1 c:\qem\BUFFERS=1 c:\qem\loadhi /r:1 c:\qem\files=40 c:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /L/Q/R PROMPT $P$G PATH=C:\;C:\dos;C:\BAT;C:\ANI;c:\vgautil;C:\WINDOWS;C:\CHAOS;C:\TPLUS; C:\TPLUS\WINAPP;c:\tplus\demo;C:\utility\pkzip VGA_INI SET TEMP=C:\PAAT SET TARGA=37 set batchval=0 Frankly, I can't figure why it clears up when I go into the Toy Universes directory.. Thanks for the detailed message. I can't help wondering if your problems could be alleviated by a simple clean bootup. There is quite a large path, and I haven't calculated the environment space you use up with it and the set commands, but you find that you're out of environment space. Try booting up clean. If it works, try amending the /e:286 to a higher value (try /e:512) in the config.sys. I'm hoping to hear again from you! Nik

Nik, Should have mentioned that I had shortened the path down to: "c:\;c:\dos;c:\bat" and that didn't change anything.. Also had been running the "/e:512 line" much higher(at 1024 and 2048) until a friend suggested lowering it.. Within my QEMM-386 V 6.02 (in manifest) it also suggested lowering it.. Even at 1024, CHAOS still doesnt load proper from 3DS. …by the way, Was my config.sys and Autoexec.bat info all over your screen or in neat rows? I looked at it in my .log file and apologize if it was downloaded all bunched up.. tried for a clean look.. Also….. Do you know that the note I forwarded to you on Feb 2 thru E-Mail just before you went away was never answered by anyone…(the section about Mac .dxf files is solved) the other questions are still relevant.. Finally, any 3DS users groups in Montreal? Would love to share all the blood and sweat I'm still going thru with others who are local .. (should this conversation have been held in the 3D studio section? regards from defrosting Montreal…
