#Windows 3.1 on Targa+32
6 messages in this thread
Is anyone using Windows 3.1/PhotoStyler on a Targa+ 16/32 and having any
successs with the display. My monitor is a Sony PVM-1342Q. This setup does not
work at all in an non-interlaced mode. Using a interlaced mode there are maybe
40 white horizontal lines that write over anything on the screen. When ever I
move a window these lines write over 40 more times in the new location. I
downloaded the driver from the Truevision library (v1.5) to make sure I had the
latest.
Is this only going to work on svga with 24 bit color?

Rick,
I have run Windows & Photostyler on the Targa+ (I have a 64) with no
problems, although my usual display is a long-persistence RGB monitor.

Rick,
I have been able to use the targa+ 16/32 as you described with a TV (tmode 3 or
11 interlaced – never again <g>) and on a Mitsubishi 16L in non-interlaced
modes. Does the targa+ work OK in 3ds and command line (with gettga.exe to load
an image)?
You could do worse than buy a Genoa 7900 24-bit svga card (640x480x24-bit,
800x600x16-bit) for around $160 and it has drivers that actually work, unlike
Diamond's 24-bit offerings, so far.
Rick,
I had a problem similar to what you're describing. My description would have
been more like, you can see through on multiple lines and the mouse pointer
breaks up funny every once in a while. What I found was that I had to exclude
the memory address that the Targa was using in the Windows configuration. It's
been a while ago. I wish I could tell you that I remembered how I did it. I'm
running Windows on my Targa at 756 x 486 x 16 noninterlaced NTSC tmode 26. I'm
doing this for use with paint programs and my 24 bit scanner. The Targa driver
does work pretty well in Windows once you debug it for your particular system.
If you have any more problems, I can dig around and try to get more particulars
for you. Good luck.

When setting up the TARGA+ to work with windows you must exclude the memory
area you are using with you TARGA (ie D000-DFFF) by adding a line in the
SYSTEM.INI file under [emm386]. This should correct your problem. I have used
my targa+ in both 512×486 32bit mode and 1024×768 16 without any problems. One
thing I have found with photosyler is that if you have an old copy that was
written for Windows 3.0 you may have some errors when working in 24bit color
under Windows 3.1. Don't know why?
Many people guessed correctly what my problem was, thanks for the input. To
solve the problem I added the following statement in the [386Enh] section to
the system.ini file in the windows directory:
EmmExclude=D000-DFFF
Thin horizontal lines still seem to flicker, but everything seems to be working
correctly now. Thanks again!!
