Delphi is a competing service to CI$ and is very CompuServe-like in what it
does. It's smaller, not having as many forums or specialized groups, but offers
much of the same general services and SiGs as here. It's also very friendly,
and has about the best EMail system I know.
Delphi provides Internet access for a surcharge of $3 per month, I think.
Various Delphi plans can get you online for as little as $1 an hour off
peak and there is no surcharge for higher baud rates.
It's funny how we are using the CD ROM forum to discuss a completely different
online system. I'm sure this is annoying some Sysop somewhere.

Actually, I think one of the neatest things about CDROM is the fact that it
catalyzes thought about alternative ways to distribute and find info. And I
certainly don't feel threatened by either Delphi or Internet. The former
because it simply can't compete with the breadth of data and services on CIS
(like or not). The latter because I can't see Aunt Minnie sending email over
the Internet, while we see it all the time on CIS and Prodigy. I am 100%
behind the Info Highways concept, but I sure wish we could get it away from
Unix interface. I've never been able to figure out if it's the product of
brain damage, or causes brain damage. Either way, it's nasty for the average
Joe or Josephine.

And we send and recieve internet e-mail on CIS already too. Also FTP is
supposed to be in the works as well. And we never have to leave CIS to access
the world. So from CIS you can hit anyone on internet, Delphi or GEnie since
they all have internet gateways.
Actually, I've discussed other services, both positively and negatively, on
almost every service or forum at one point or another. Nobody really cares. The
pie's big enough and CIS really is dominant–one reason why ten or eleven
thousand or so folks prefer to conduct their email and such on Delphi or GEnie
or whatever and come here when they have problems.
For the record, several senior CIS Sysops are Delphi regulars, too!
Delphi sounds good – I use CIS almost entirely for access to the technical
forums, and expect from what you say that Delphi will have fewer manufact-
urers represented, but it would be interesting to be able to dip one's toe into
the Internet river. How do I join?
You can sample it at 5 hours for $5 by using your modem to dial
1-800-365-4636, press return a couple of times when connected, at Password
enter CS55. Or, you can get a kit and join or get answers to questions over the
voice line, 1-800-695-4005.
Aside from the Internet connection, which the 5/$5 wouldn't give you unless
you join at the end, the Email system is much nicer than any other online
service (and there are no limits or extra charges for it) and the Wednesday
night on-line live science fiction conference is legendary enough to have been
written up in a lot of computer magazines.
