The machine we're testing on is only a 20Mhz machine (mainly so we can get a
"down-to-earth" idea of the performance), and that's probably why we've had
such horrible luck with software polling on the various CD-ROM interfaces. We
have had a couple that would work, but others, including the Mitsumi, just
never worked out. Generally the faster the machine, the quicker the response
time on software polling.
Argh… I'm sorry you went through all that effort and didn't get it to work.
Please, try it with the DMA enabled and let me know if you have any success. In
addition, you might also want to try using the "1.5" Mitsumi driver package in
the software library. I know this version worked in-house on the 16-bit
interface, and the drivers which came with the drive worked (but I don't know
what version those were, sorry).

I got it to work!!! I'm using the stardard defaults for everything,
except
that I'm using SW polling for the Mitsumi. This is, of course, what I first
tried, and
tried several times, and it never worked before. The only thing I did different
was
to re-install DOS. (re-formatted my hard drive first, due to another unrelated
matter).
Only thing that makes sense is that it was either the version of the MS-CDROM
driver or the mouse driver, but I can't swear to that. Anyway, I'm using IRQ 7
on the SB and the default on the Mitsumi (I think it's 10). And, running a
386DX
at 25MHZ, 8MB of RAM.

Glad to hear it John! But that certainly was a pretty drastic step to take…
In any case, if you have any more problems just give me a yell. I try to check
both this and the MULTIMEDIA forum on a daily basis, but unless the post has
Sherlock in the title I'm left to play a guessing game to randomly stumble onto
the correct threads, like I did for you…
