Hmmm… 2.5? Are you sure its not one of the infamous hacked versions? // \X/ Amiga -Steve ——> On AutoPilot from Silicon Valley

Got a net feed from Olaf.. Term 3.1 is being released now… -Jonathan

Next time you communicate with Olaf, could you ask him if he got the package I sent him before Christmas. I've never heard from him (not even a letter) since I sent it. It was my contribution for TERM! Thanks, Rodger

I don't actually "talk" to him, I just saw a net feed indicating that the 3.1 version of Term would be available later that week (last week). -Jonathan

If you have it, could you PLEASE u/l it?!? I use 2.4 (poss 2.4a), but it just seems a little too fragile for my tastes. Having to set a max error limit of 999 just so that the Zmodem XPR will _eventually_ resync annoys me. Especially when VLT, running under the same circumstances, works perfectly. // Brian — Cruising on AutoPilot….. \X/

When I get it (the new version of Term – 3.1 ) I will upload it…. -Jonathan

Brian, Try bumping up the Term priority to 1. (Settings/misc or A-8). Once I did that, all the ZModem errors went away. Note that you'll have to change this in any phonebook entries as well. FYI, I'm using 2.4a. // \X/ Amiga -Steve ——> On AutoPilot from Silicon Valley
#90561From: Brian CowanFeb 28, 1993 2:55 PM
I did that, and where Term 2.3 liked that, 2.4 had my errors re-appear. I'll have to look at it again — probably re-build my phonebook from scratch just to make sure…. // Brian — Cruising on AutoPilot….. \X/

Forrest, Did you get Term 3.1 from here? When I'm not using AP, that's my Term program of choice. I also appreciate the fact that it's continually updated. My latest version is 2.4a. I didn't know about 3.1 until now. Dom Fontana –> Sent from NY via AP <–

Have any of you TERM 3.1 users experienced a lock up trying to DL with Y-Modem? I've been using 2.4a for quite a while with no problems, however, since I've upgraded to ver 3.1 I can't do squat on CompuServe with out locking up on DL's. I noticed that the Y-Modem Library had changed, but even the older version didn't help… I'd appreciate it if you've experienced the same problems and could tell me how to cure them…3.1 has some great features as compared to 2.4a… Alan Henry c/o Presidio Software

Alan, I've only been working with TERM 3.1 for a few days, but have not had a successful download yet (been using the quick B protocol). It begins OK, then goes into one long series of time outs….and abort seems to take a long time to kick in. Thought it was something I was doing wrong, or had the config wrong, but maybe there's something else going on here. Sorry, no answer to a "fix"….but at least misery enjoys some company. Gary

Question: When I try to download with QuickB, I get a window on my screen asking for a path to "start the protocol". The default is something like "dow/proto:quickb" or somesuch. What do I have to enter here? Any and all help appreciated. Seth // "A whole wide world, // An endless Universe. \\// Yet we keep looking \/ Through the eyeglass in Reverse."

Have you tried the default? I suspect it will work. You might have to change the / to a ; or a space, though. After this, CompuServe will ask for a "name for your computer to use" and you will need to type the path as well as the filename, such as: DF0:NEWFILE.LHA —Betty

Seth, First, check the reply I got from Scott, on making your buffer the maximum (like 256K) that you can afford. That seems to get the downloads to flow. Second, go the setting menu, Protocols, and then use the directory requester to get you to wherever your library files are stored (term libraries, that is). Once you get there, choose the quickb.lib. As soon as that's done, pull down the same Settings menu, and choose "save". That should establish the path that Term needs to find the quickB protocol (or any other protocol you choose). That's as far as I've gotten so far. According to the docs, that should make the download totally automatic, but I still get a requester from compuserve wanting the file name for my computer. That should be automatically taken care of, but obviously I still need some more config. work to make that happen. Will share with you when I get done. Gary

Gary, as far as I know CIS will always ask for 'a filename for your computer' when you access through anything other than Autopilot. I think that's on the CIS end and not your Term_inal. Scott
#92244From: Larry PittmanMar 15, 1993 11:58 AM
Scott, I will confirm that. I work directly connected to a CIS node and a remote file name is always requested. -Larry

Thanks. Will try it now. Seth

Gary, I too expierienced the timeout problem with quickB & TERM3.1, I think it has to do with the quickB protocol because you'll notice that the timeouts occur when the buffer gets filled and written to the HD. When you're HD light blinks suddenly you're Recieved light on the modem stops blinking, then you register 2 timeouts. Pretty irritating eh? Try this… from the main screen ( not from the phonebook) select menu/settings/Transfer… when QuickB is the selected protocol ( shown in the status window. Go to the requester and change the buffer size from 16 kb to whatever you can afford memory wise. I set mine to 256 KB and since then I don't recieve timeouts anymore…unless the file is over 256 kb. Hope that helps… Scott

Scott, I had just downloaded a small 3K file with QB, and it worked. Now that I've read your note I know why! Thanks for the buffer tip…will do. Gary

No problem, sometimes though I just wish CIS would offer Zmodem or SuperZmodem. I really like that protocol, I've gotten almost 2000 cps with Zmodem talking to an Amiga based BBS in my area downloading compressed data at 14.4 Scott
#91656From: Betty Clay/SYSOPMar 10, 1993 1:17 AM
Scott, You can almost always get quicker downloads at a local BBS than through any network. On the BBS, you have your computer, your modem, their modem, and their computer all to yourself, and there is no delay for packet-switching. Not so with any of the big networks. I like ZModem, too, but it is not faster than B+, nor have I found it to be better in any way. —Betty
#91790From: scott nelsonMar 11, 1993 12:16 AM
Betty, Since quickB can't be tested on any local BBS I know I think it's hard to say which is faster. Why do you say that it's faster? The ability to down or upload a selected queue with Zmodem is the reason that I like it. I didn't know that quickB had that ability. Scott
#91958From: William CageMar 12, 1993 6:20 PM
Except for one big difference… ZModem is widely used, B+ exists only on compuserve. Bill

James, Sorry, but I don't have Term 3.1 yet. Maybe someone else can help you. Dom Fontana –> Sent from NY via AP <–
#91422From: R. Seth TrotmanMar 8, 1993 1:55 AM
I've had the same problem with Term 2.4a. Locks up after block 2024 has been received.
#91426From: scott nelsonMar 8, 1993 2:22 AM
Hmmm, well James I have Term 3.1 but I have never used Y-modem with CIS as quickB gives me the fastest response. Why do you use Y-modem? In terms of new features they seem a little scarce to me, theres the wait feature and the difference in the phone book (double click to dial) but other than that… Ever notice how when you drag the review window down to make it bigger the text doesn't expand to fill it? You have to drag it down again for the text to fill to the first size you dragged it to. Wierd. Anyways, try quickB Ok. Scott
#91434From: James GreenMar 8, 1993 6:52 AM
Thanks for the responses…I've fixed the problem, although I'm not exactly sure why it fixed it. I changed to HIGH-SPEED mode and STRIP BIT 8 in the SERIAL SETTINGS menu. Everything now runs flawlessly. As far as DL/UL speeds, I achieve 204 chars/sec. What does QuickB get? I've tried both QuickB and B+ with no luck. I've read their respective docs, but I must be missing something. I have the protocol selected, I choose it as the DL protocol on CIS, CIS spits out its initialization line, I select DL Binary File from the TRANSFER MENU, a requester comes up requesting a name for the file. After I enter a name and hit select, me and the computer just sit and stare at each other waiting for someone to make a move. Finally CIS steps in and says "OK guys quit your messing around" and terminates the DL with a timeout error. I don't even get as far as the DL Panel appearing. To make a short story long, that is why I use Y-Modem. Alan Henry c/o Presidio Software
#91435From: James GreenMar 8, 1993 7:24 AM
OK, disregard the last message…I just made a few more SETTINGs changes (although they may have had nothing to do with the fixes) and QUICKB is now up and running as advertised. WOW, 230 chars/sec vers. 204 chars/sec.. .I don't do much better than that with Z-Modem. How is QB's error trapping? Any problems with chopping off files at the end etc. What is KERMIT? How fast is it and who does his voice now that Henson went to the great fraggle rock in the sky? Alan Henry c/o Presidio Software

Could be a hacked version. The docs have some kind of addendum about being a beta release; If it's beta, the author ought to weed out some of his less honest testers. I've had some strange crashes with it. Never got my hands on 2.4a though. -Chris
