#WB 2.x/3.x VS WB 1.3
16 messages in this thread
This is sort of an informal survey (read: not a debat)
Please leave me a brief message telling me which WB version(s) you use (let me
know if you use more then one version on the same machine), which one you use
most often, and in twenty-five words or less (or there abouts) why you think we
should or should not support WB1.3 in our "PROFESSIONAL" series of programs in
the future (and if you use Gold Disk software, which packages you use the
most).
At this time, this is for interest sake…it will *not* determine the support
for workbench versions in the future.
Thanks
Philip Laitar, Manager
Philip,
I use Wb3.0 on an A3000 quite succesfully no real problems to date.
PPage 3 gets used the most followed closely by PCalc.
As to supporting wb1.3 then no. That version is dead and as you are well aware
C= will not support it. There will no doubt be umpteen people who say what
about them with 1.3. They will have to upgrade, simple as that.
Pete from Dorset in Englands West Country – via Whap!
I use 2.04 on an A3000 sans rom.
I plan to upgrade to 3.0 as soon as it becomes the standard. 1.3 should be
buried, with appropriate ceremony, pomp and circumstance. Viva progress!
Philip,
I use WB 2.1, and I believe the days of 1.3 are behind us. Each version of the
operating system has enhanced my use and enjoyment of the Amiga, and I intend
to one day get 3.0 and an AGA machine. I currently use DESKTOP BUDGET, a Gold
Disk program written on OS 1.2, but quite stable under 2.1. BTW thanks again
for getting me that upgrade!
A. Pagan
Gold Disk,
It use AmigaDOS 3.0 & 2.05 every day. I will not use a machine that has
AmigaDOS 1.3 installed. 1.3 is dead, you should not support it further.

I use 3.0 with new 4000. BUT I have an old 1000 with no HD that is my
first computer & love. It's also my "backup". It uses 1.3. I can't imagine
anyone using "Professional" software with 1.3. Nor why anyone with a 2000
or souped up 1000 would not have upgraded. It doesn't cost THAT much.
I use both 1.3 and 2.04 (soon to get 2.1). I use 2.04 about 95% of the
time. The need to support 1.3 keeps Amiga software anemic and
underpowered. Imagine clones that still had to support DOS 2.1 and
Windows 2.0., while trying to emulate the functions in the newer O.S.'s.
This situation hurts the Amiga.

Philip,
I use WB 2.1 on my A3000 and A2000, and 3.0 on my A1200. My A3000 gets by
far the most use; therefore, I use 2.1 the most.
IMO, the vast majority of Amigans still running WB 1.3 are A500 or A1000
owners who use their machines primarily for playing games. I doubt many of
these people *own* and use Gold Disk software. Drop 1.3 support…1.3 is
dead.
I own PPage 3.0 (and will own 4.0 as soon as you folks send out my
upgrade). If the next rev. of PDraw is anything like the Windows version
(which I've seen but do not own), I'll certainly buy it too.
-Dave (via AutoPilot)
Currently use WB 1.3 on A500 with PPage 1.3… Can't do too much with it
because of memory requirements, but it is good to rough out docs.
Also use WB 2.05 on A3000, also with PPage 1.3, but plan to upgrade to 4.0.
With your trend towards ever more complex and featured Professional series
programs, I doubt that low end users would even be able to use them
productively. I know I bypassed 2.0 and 3.0 because of memory and speed
requirements.
BTW, perhaps this would be a good place to address one of my pet peeves about
Amiga software… Remember the '65 Ford Mustang? Small, inexpensive yet
sporty. Very popular. Made Iacocca famous. Remember the '73 Mustang, or the
'76? Nope. Why? Ford made them bigger and bigger every year, with more and
more features, until those who would have just loved to have had a small,
inexpensive sports car couldn't afford a Mustang, and maybe wouldn't have even
wanted one of those underpowered beasts. Same thing happened to the Pontiac
Firebird…
When I first bought my A500, in the spring of '88, I was impressed by the
performance of the available software, and it's amazing price (esp. considering
the small number of users). Sculpt 3D was $70. I thought PPage 1.2 was
expensive at $250 ( I think that's what I payed for it), but it was cheaper
(still is, btw) than equivalent IBM or MAC software. Now, however, the trend is
towards really full featured products for top of the line machines; a noble
goal indeed. But don't forget there are LOTS of folks out there who have low
end machines (wasn't the 500 the most popular amiga) who can't afford to
upgrade substantial mem. or rom mods. Please dont 'sorry, Please don't ignore
their needs. Perhaps you, and other software producers, could offer earlier
versions on a request only basis for those who don't have high-end machines.
As I said before, I bypassed 2.0 and 3.0 because my 500 couldn't handle it. If
I had just bought a 500, say, a year ago, you wouldn't have had me as a
customer AT ALL, because I wouldn't have been able to a lower grade version of
PPage.
Anyhow, I now have a 3000, so I hope I can keep up with you for a little while,
maybe another year, right??
I use 2.1 on both of my main machines (a stock and a turbo 2000). I have
a 500 running 1.3 which is used only for games which will not run on the
other machines. The sooner 1.3 support is dropped from professional
software the sooner all Amiga software will truly look professional. And,
of course, be easier to write. Best of all, it will force the holdouts to
upgrade. They'll thank you for it when they do.

I use AmigaDOS 2.1 on my A2000 with the 2.04 ROM. I think 1.3 was a
nice upgrade (the first to support autoboot) at the time but 2.1 has it
beat hands down. There is one good reason to support 1.3, I still think
most users currently use it, but with the A1200 & A4000 1.3 will be be
fading.
1.3 is dead, history, finished, etc… I use 2.1 and plan to move to 3.0
with an AGA based machine soon. I think that *ALL* software should be
written to require 2.0+ and when possible, take advantage of AGA.
I have an old A1000 that I use for fun but I probably haven't turned it on
in at least 6 months.
-Jonathan
My A2.5K runs 2.04. May update to 2.1, will update to 3.0 if a version is
released for my machine.
WB 1.3 is old, obsolete, dead, and plain old UGLY!
My A1k still runs 1.3, but I don't feed it any commercial programs, so
don't count it.
73, Kelly
I'm using WB 2.1 on my '020 2000 and never look back. Well, maybe a
little … I did like the "1942" game. <g>
One reason not to support 1.3 might be exemplified by a fellow I know. He
has had a 1000 since 1986, and, as far as I know, has bought only a
handful of programs. This fellow wouldn't know what to do with a
"Professional" anything, but would happily take a copy, thank you very
much! Of course he is always going on about how much more 'mature'
software for IBMs is .. of course. I think he's a 'type', and that there
are others like him. I think they deserve to be left behind.
ProPage is in almost daily use, Pro Draw only as needed, and recently
acquired Pro Calc is coming along nicely.

Altitude hold is on; now all's I need is coupled nav!
I use WB 2.1 on my A3000 about 99% of the time. I also have a A2000
with WB 1.3 that is used mostly by my wife to sign to the mainframe
where she works. I used the A2000 a little yesterday. Yuk, I've got
to get it running WB 2.1 soon.
In my opinion professional software does not need to support WB 1.3
anymore. But then I'm planning to developing something soon so I may be
biased on this.

I think you should NOT consider wb1.3 in future program release. The
reason most often given for people NOT upgrading to the Newest OS is cost.
I feel if people can not afford to upgrade to the newest OS, then how can
they afford any of your "PROFESSIONAL" series of programs (for that matter
they probably can't even afford your upgrade cost).
