#morph plus questions
10 messages in this thread
I would like to get morph plus but am not sure how well it will look on my
system. I am setup with a 68030, 18 megs, a toaster and flicker fixer. My
questions/concerns are 1) Is there a way to get the morph sequence into the
toaster? 2) Is there a way to work with toaster 24 bit images in morph plus
without going to a lower resolution. I have seen some of the demos (both on
video tape and on the stock 2000). The demo on the stock 2000 was the one
where the ladies eyes offset. I was wondering how most of the morphs were
displayed to get them on the Video tape.
Micheal, I don't work for ASDG but all you need to do to get yer Toaster
images into Morphplus is to save em out as RGB images and then load into
Morph Plus.
Your system will be just fine for broadcast (and cinematic morphing). Morphs
for Babylon 5, Quantum Leap, and several movies including Tommyknockers and
Warlock 2 were done with basically what you described.
You will NOT have to reduce resolution at all coming or going to the Toaster.
In fact, you'll be able to (well, there's an upgrade of ADPro happening right
now – and I don't want to spill the beans prematurely :-).
Getting video onto tape is as easy as their are ways to do it. We use two
methods here at our company – 1) we use an laser disk recorder to record single
frames…we use FRED (which comes with MorphPlus) to assemble and edit the
finished video and to preview it before committing it to disk). 2) we use
Abekas A60 digital video tapes for our highest quality work. We have direct
Amiga support of this D1 digital video format available for use in ADPro and
MorphPlus.
About how much per frame does it cost to go to D1 ? Aproximately….

The cost of going to D1 cannot be measured per frame (as say, with printing to
a specialized printer). The upfront costs are approximately $2500 for the
appropriate tape drive (reusable as a massive backup device) and about $15 per
tape which holds something like 14000 images.
The per-frame cost would be associated with whatever post or editing house you
contract with to transfer D1 to video.
Dunno the going rate of D@ but Have seen pricing of $3.25 per MINUTE to
have footage Dubbed to 1"
Thanks :^) I'd still like to get an Exabyte.

I had to morph a lady into a lion. I used the Toaster to grab both
images, cleanedthem up intToasterPaint, saved them as RGB (aka IFF24)
then designated them as start and end image in the morph sequence. I then
save the morph sequence to disk and single framed the IFF24 frame ouputs
of morph plus via the Toaster and Nucleus PSF to S-VHS. Looks great. The
entire process to create a3second morph sequence took about 12 hours – I
had to rotate and size the lion's head to get it to a position that made a
nice morph and delete background from both images, so most of the 12 hours
was spent in ToasterPaint. The actual morph and single frame to tape took
about2 hours.

Much of the correction you did in ToasterPaint can be directly done in
MorphPlus. Deleting backgrounds is a snap (especially AFTER) you've already
created the morph – just rerun the SAME morph with Cookie Cutter mode ON
(instead of sliding edges) and use WHITE RECTANGLES instead of your images. The
rotation might also have been accomplished either directly using the rotation
operator or by warping.

Hmmm, sounds like there is a section of the manual I missed. I don't
recall anything about cookie cutters…
