Is it possible to run CD-I disks on a PC CDROM drive? When I got my CDROM drive it states in operation manual that the drive is CD-I compatible but I haven't heard how this can be done. Anyone with any ideas??? Thanks, – Mike –

Michael, It's highly unlikely that your PC CD-ROM will support CD-I discs, since the CD-I machine has a proprietary 680×0 chip. Who manufactured/marketed your drive? Kathy <<– The One-Off CD Shop MidSouth, Inc.

I guess I need a better understanding of just what CD-I is but the drive is a Toshiba 3401. Thanks, – Mike

That's ok, Mike. There's far more misinformation about that format than almost any other I've observed recently. In general, CD-I is a non-ISO9660 standard for CDs that is platform dependent. Unlike ISO9660 discs, which can frequently be read by several different platforms, CD-I makes demands on system-specific firmware, especially (I think) with regard to data compression/decompression, which is used extensively to produce some high-quality multimedia effects. However, it is slow. You can find out more about it in the CD-I section of the Multimedia forum. If you'd like more details, you could write, fax or call me — we're starting to get into the format since a client is interested in some developing. My address & phone number is in the MFGR.TXT file in Library 8 here. Kathy <<– The One-Off CD Shop MidSouth, Inc.

Mike: I can't imagine why the mfgr would would put CD-I compatible on the box. You cannot use it for CD-I (at least without investing some thousands of $$$ i an authoring system). CD-I requires its own special player and no computer is naturally compatible with it. Did this box come directly from Toshiba, or via a reseller who might have put this legend on the package?
