#Mitsumi to Original SB?
5 messages in this thread
Is it possible to achieve some multimedia capabilities by interfacing a Mitsumi
drive to a SB (not pro or plus) card? If anyone has been successful, please let
me know, I'm stuck.

Jerry — Some of the folks here get a simple mixer from Rat Shack, and mix the
outputs from the SB and the CD-ROM — using an external amp. I have a couple
of little speakers for the the SB, and feed the Red Book audio into a separate
stereo system so that I can listen to CD's. In theory, you could run a cable
from the earphone output on the drive to the input on the SB, but that doesn't
appear to work too well, if at all. I suspect the mixer approach is the best
in that you will then have the best possible audio quality from the SB and the
CD.

Craig, thanks for your answer. Being totally new to CD-Rom technology, I assume
Red Book refers to audio CD's played on the cd_Rom drive. I assume that any
program that uses digital sound effects will access the SB board directly just
like it does when ru\nning from a hard disk. Is there any need to mix the
outputs of the CD-Rom driver board and the SB board? I also would be satisfied
with a set of little speakers for the SB and amplified speakers for the CD-Rom
board.
Jerry — The only reason for a mixer is that then you don't need a second set
of speakers, and get the best sound from both the SB and the CD. Red Book does
refer to a standard for playing audio directly from the CD-ROM, without a sound
card. Great audio, but, of course, no voices or other sounds needing synth or
DAC intervention. Just be sure you have windows set for the original SB (as
I'm sure you already do), hook up a good stereo, and get MM Beethoven's 9th —
the single most educational product I have ever seen — really GREAT, if you
like classical music at all.
Craig
Jerry,
It's even simpler than Craig offers, take the sound output from the Mitsumi and
connect it to the SB, and let the SB's output handle all the sound, whether to
small connected speakers, or via a split to your stereo amplifier. All you need
is a little cable, or a conversion plug at the end of the cablette the Mitsumi
comes with, to fit it to your SB.
You can/must still use the Mitsumi's controller, it's just the sound that you
need to connect.
