AMAX Screensaver

Does anyone know of a screensaver compatable with AMAX? I have pyro but
it crashes the machine when used.

Moire works fine. I don't recall exactly, but I believe that I've used a
recent version of Pyro w/o problems. What version of the mac operating system
and what version of the pyro utility are you using?

I have Pyro 4.0, and I am running 6.07. What version of Moire do you
have?

Having written screen savers for the Mac, and knowing a bit about the Pyro
internals, I would be very surprised to find any complex screen saver
capable of running under A-Max. Screen Savers on the Mac are probably the
worst kludges possible, primarily because that's the only way to *write*
any reasonable screen saver on the machine.
You might try some of the simpler PD screen savers – One of them might
work…

I've been using After Dark, can't recall which version I was using, latest
one with the lawnmower man module and the space game. I turned off the
INIT with my INIT manager cause it caused a lockup when I used the RESTART
or SHUTDOWN and then try to RESTART. I just turn off the monitor when not
using the computer for any length of time while in AMAX mode. I also found
that Pyro (rather early version) caused my MAC II ci slow down, and lose
parts of files when printing Postscript to my Varityper 4300P laser
imager. It caused lots of headaches until I turned it off. My ex-partner
wanted it ON, but I tried to explain running the thing full tilt,
demanding as much screen refresh as the program could muster from the CPU
caused the system to "cough" and lose portions of the data going over
Appletalk, since a MAC can't truly multi-task, something has to give when
the CPU gets overloaded with work.

I used to use Pyro that worked fine on my AMAX system. I just recently
purchased After Dard and it works flawlessly as well.

hmmn, what version of Pyro did you use? I don't see much point in running
After Dark on a B/W machine.

I think it was some 4.x version, don't remember. After Dark has many
different modules that look great in black and white.

Thanks. I had 4.01 and no luck at all with it. I know that on "real"
Macs, After Dark gave us less trouble than any other screen saver. I
guess I'll have to give it a try, you're the second one using it to
reply.

I really like After Dark. I only wish there was something similar on the
Amiga. I would PAY to have it. Any developers listening? I have tried
multi-module screen savers like SuperDark and TwilightZone but they just
don't compare to AfterDark for the MAC and Windows…
I figure some clever programmer can make a real nice commodity controlled
screen blanker and charge $50 and would probably make out real nice.

My guess is… it would be very popular with pirates, just as it is on the
Mac. On the other hand, the company that makes After Dark does very well by
selling to the honest people, but the Mac and Windows markets are so much
bigger than the Amiga market.

I think anyone who tries to market a _screen_blanker_ for $50 (or even
$25) will go BROKE fast.
As far as I am concerned, a screen blanker just needs to blank the screen,
and if a freeware (free) or shareware (cheap) commodity does it, I'm not
gonna drop good money on a commercial one.

Mac people buy screen blankers all the time… (I can't figure out why
anyone would pay money for just a screen blanker either.)

About the only reason to BUY a screenblanker rather than use a shareware
or freeware screenblanker is in companies that have a NO PD policy. Of
course this wouldn't help somebody in the Amiga market for a
screenblanker, as the OS now comes with a screenblanker, and it can even
draw pretty lines on your screen while it's blanking it if you want.

I've been using After Dark but it causes the Restart and Shut Down to
freeze up on me.
If I select Restart it locks up. If I choose Shut Down and then click on
the Restart button in the Window sometimes it will Restart other times it
locks up. So I took After Dark out of the INIT sequence and both menu
choices work fine now.

I use AfterDark under AMAX and it doesn't cause *ANY* problems with
shutting down and restarting….

That is strange I haven't that trouble, I use A-maxII+ 2.53 on a A3000
25/50 10 Megs memory, System 7.01.
