Does anyone know if PC MicroSoft Word files are compatible with Mac MS Word files? A friend asked if I could do the transfer – and, if they are – it's another job for the amazing Amiga with CrossDos and AMax… Any help is appreciated… Thanks, Joe

Joe, If you are referring to WinWord 2.0 they are exportable to various versions of Mac Word if you have the converters installed. Select Save As and at the bottom of the requestor will be a click-down menu from which you can select the export form. If you have Word 5.1 on the Mac it's pretty much the same thing. However, I haven't yet experimented to see if the files are directly readable between WinWord 2.0 and MacWord 5.1 other than via the conversions. However, there is a possibility that they are so long as the document doesn't contain graphics. WinWord 2.0 can export files in a number of different formats including Mac Word, Wordperfect, ASCII, MacWrite, Works, etc.

Steven – Unfortunately, I don't know if the Word files are DosWord or WinWord – I got another message indicating that they were cross-compatible. I'll give it a shot later today. – Joe

Joe, My guess is that it won't make any real difference whether it's DosWord or WinWord so long as they are the same versions. MacWord 5.1, the latest Mac version, and DosWord 2.0 are essentially similar other than feature differences between the two platforms. File formats are very likely similar or at least transferable thru the converters. I would suspect that they are compatible. However, they are NOT compatible between DosWord and MacWord 4.x. I have tested this and found that MacWord 4.x files are not at all compatible with the Dos Words, at least not with WinWord 2.0.

Joe, the current versions of Word for Windows and the MAC will read Word for DOS – along with about 15 other formats… -Jonathan

MS Word 2.0 for Windows and MS Word 5.x for the MAC will read each others formats and retain styling, graphics, etc… -Jonathan
