We haven't been very successful creating fire with the yost rain and glow routines. We have had limited success with thew smoke routine, but feel we could do much better. We recently saw a broadcast of an animation with fire that was very realistic on a show called What Happened. is it possible to create realistic fire with these routines? any further assistance would be very helpful.

McDowell, I've recently been doing quite a bit of work with fire myself. I haven't used the glow routine but I could send you a sample animation with some flames on it. If it looks close to the effect you're looking for, I'll send you the data files for it. It may not be exactly what you're after but it's a start. <g> BTW, Yann has indicated to me that portions of a 3D Studio promotional image may be available to us as an exmple of fire creation techniques. The image consists of a "burning barn". It's a really great image! Yann, any news on that file? <g,d,& r>

Yes, I'm also looking for a good fire creation. We have a upcoming animation which is going to use a lot of fire. Any files or examples would be most helpfull. Carl

Carl, I'll upload something to the forum this weekend. I'll include the sample animation, the 3DS file and opacity flic. Bear in mind that I don't use the glow routine for my versions of "fire". (I don't have it yet!<g>) However, you could easily add that yourself. BTW, how did that "sand dunes" animation turn out? I'd love to see it! Regards, Danny…

Danny- That sand dunes was great. I used part of it in a animation we are putting to tape for a demo. As soon as it is out of the editing house I'll send you a copy. Just post your address on my email and I'll keep it on file. As always thanks for your help Carl

Check your email. BTW, can you tell me little bit about your animation. What's it about? Regards, Danny…

Danny- The animation is a combination or accident recreations and their possibilities as it implies to the legal system. It was mostly done as a request from a group of laywers how wanted to see the visual impacts of animation, as per their specifications. BTW check the time and date of this message, but as of yet no email. Just to let you know in case you set something and it got lost. Thanks Carl

In addition to Danny's comments, I've actually played around with the fire thing and I think I've got pretty realistic-looking fire. Again, in line with Dan's comments, remember these key points: – use the smoke ipas with red and yellow colours – apply an opacity map of a slow gradation from bright white (bottom) to black (top) — use AAPRO for this, you can experiment with the R-GRAD to get a "local" fire effect – use the rain ipas with chaos set to 100% and left-to-right set to 45 degrees, make sure you flip the rain upside down so the "sparks" are flying upwards (give that a red material) – apply the glow routine set with the BRIGHTNESS indicator off of 190 or something This produces VERY realistic fires. I must admit it didn't look too realistic until the glow routine was applied properly and then — WOW.. real fire! Give it a whirl.. — Steve, hope it helps

Steven, You might want to try this out for even more realistic looking flames. Replace the white to black gradient image that you're using as an opacity map with an animated opacity map. I'll post a sample to forum this weekend. Check it out and let me know what you think. As I pointed out to Carl, I'm not using glow so you'll have to put that in yourself. It looks very realistic, even without glow. (I'm going to get a copy of glow as soon as I can. <g>)

Ahh, nice idea about the animated opacity map. Lemme know what the filename is when you get around to uploading it! — Steve

I'll let you know as soon as I post it. I'm working on it right now. I'm trying out an idea I had the other day. In addition to the animated opacity map, I'm adding an animated bump map and then morphing the whole thing! The only thing I haven't done yet is add GLOW. TTYL, Danny…

There ya go, Steve! It just goes to show you what a little imagination will do for ya. You're using the routines EXACTLY as intended… TOGETHER. – G
