#MAC FLI Player?
9 messages in this thread
Does anyone know if there is a Macintosh FLI player, or a conversion utility
that will translate a FLI file into a flavour of mac animation? Alternatively,
does anyone know if there is a utility to convert sequential TGA files into
QuickTime?
Thanks in advance.

Tom,
A company called Equilibrium (415/332/4343) has a product called
Debabelizer that runs on the Mac that may does this.

Martin,
I've got Debabelizer, and Yes, it does convert FLI and FLC files to quicktime
movies.

Thanks for the confirmation.
Tom —
There's an FLI Player for the Mac that's written by A.P. Maika — he has a CIS
address, but I don't have it handy — should be at "GO DIRECTORY." Seems to
work flawlessly. I found it on Planet BMUG.
And Martin's right about DeBabelizer — it will handle both of the conversions
you desire. But I've raved elsewhere about DeBab, and will refrain from further
abuse of our hosts' hospitality.

Thanks everyone for the snappy replies. I will order debabelizer tomorrow. Any
ideas where they got the name from?!?
Cheers!

Tom —
The name "DeBabelizer" comes from the Tower of Babel, where people weren't able
to communicate with each other — the program unites different file formats,
color depths, frame rates, and platforms, but does not handle architectural
files!
Equilibrium and Autodesk are almost neighbors, both in Sausalito — I think
it'd be cool if the app were ported to the PC. Anyone know of other FLI
conversions, utilites or players?

John,
Thanks for the info. For your information, it seems that deBabelizer is the
perfect application for a current project at the Royal Ontario Museum. We are
developing a mac based interactive application which allows visitors to explore
the optical properties of gemstones, including the sparkle of diamond, the
chatoyancy of Cat's Eyes and Star Sapphires, and the play of colour in Opals.
Visitors get the chance to change the properties of gems – the shape of a
brilliant cut diamond or the index of refraction of a diamond – and see the
effect on the light. We are using a variety of programs, ranging from 3D studio
to Prisms (probably) to Persistance of Vision to Renderman to produce the
animations. Then we are going to translate these sequences (and video sequences
of real gems) into full-frame full motion Quicktime movies. Using a RasterOps
MxTV board with the QuickTime accelerator, visitors will have a change to play
with gems and see why they do what they do. Debabylizer – it hasen't arrived
yet – should be the perfect translator for the project.
Thanks again for the tip. I look forward to using it.
(Are you sure you don't work for Equilibrium ?!?!? 🙂

Tom,
Any chance of seeing some of this "GEMS" stuff in a future User's Group
meeting?
