#Basic CD-ROM ?'s

I am thinking about getting a CD-ROM soon and have a few basic questions:
1) Do I have to have Windows 3.1 to use CD-ROM, or can I just stick to
DOS 5.0? I'm not a big Windows fan, but it looks like a lot of the
CD-ROM applications require it.
2) I have a Soundblaster Pro Basic (no MIDI). Will I have to upgrade
to the full Soundblaster Pro, or get another sound card, in order
to get a CD-ROM to work?
I guess that's all for new. I'm hoping to spend about $500 for a
package that comes with some CDs and won't be a big hassle to set
up. Any suggestions out there?

MPC-compatible applications require Windows, but certainly not all
applications.

Not to be obvious, but you only need a sound card if the CDROMs you will be
using utilize sound. And some CDROMs use the standard (so-called) "red book"
for their audio, which means you can plug right ino the jack on the drive
itself. Generally speaking, however, your current card ought to suffice, at
least until you get your feet wet.
Sounds like you need a drive and some discs and you're in business!
