#CD ROM – How do I Produc

We are developing a large database (200mb+) that our users will access via
bulletin board. Although it is updated weekly, significant changes take place
quarterly. We are thinking of distributing it on CDROM, quarterly. (500
copies).
The database is like a product price list. We must be able to search on all
the fields of each record. Some of our users have Windows and some will not.
It looks like the price is right to produce the CDROM's. My question is how do
I produce the software the users will use to access and search the database.
Also, in the future we will have to include drawings of the products (which we
cannot do easily with the bulletin board approach.
Any ideas? Is this the right BB to find info?

If you get a drive letter you can access the CD-ROM as you would a hard drive.
Also make sure the database you use doesn't require it to have write access to
the device. Since CD-ROM is read-only you will run into problems.
What database are you using? Is it custom or dBASE compatible?
Thanks for the info. I do not have a CDROM and am totally ignorant about how
they are accesses. Do you mean that by simply plugging the CDROM and SCSI-II
card into my computer, I can access it as, say, E: ? Surely, there must be
some kind of system software that makes this possible.
I use CA-Clipper to develop applications, and would like to stay with this
language and access databases on the CDROM.

With Microsoft extentions it makes your CD-ROM drive appear as a normal hard
drive does. It works quite nicely. This is completely transparent to the user
as it should be.

There are several (hundreds) of programs that allow you to use a database from
CD-ROM. What you are looking for, I think, is something that can be
distributed on the CD itself (preferably with no royalty requirements, right?)
In this case, you might have to pay a little more for the development system,
but once you've developed your application you can use it even on a public BBS
legally and easily.
You might look in the forum library here for the Production section. There are
lists of manufacturers and software developers who specialize in CD-ROM
products, and there are several packages that would meet your needs.
