Dave, the rest of the messages will give you several good ways to over come
this limitation. What I can tell you is that in the beta OS/2 v2.1 version this
problem is totally eliminated by a new VDM setting. You do not even have to
load MSCDEX. Hope you have some luck in the mean time. — Doug.

Could you elaborate a little for me on this new VDM setting. I have a
new OS/2 PDK CD-ROM "in the mail" to me as we speak. Thanks for getting back.

David, the new setting is in the OS/2 v2.1 beta that came on CD-ROM marked
12/92. There is a readme file that says that when MSCDEX is required by an DOS
application then this"DOS Setting" must be set to ON. I have tried it with
several of my CD-ROM's and it works great. Unfortunetly I am at my work PC that
does not have the beta version loaded there for I can not give you the exact
setting name. If you would like I can get you that name from my home PC. This
setting acts as a built in MSCDEX. Hope this information helps. Doug Vaughan.
P.S. – roomer has it that the v2.1 will be released in MAY93.

saying the demand is so high for the PDK CD that the have run out! I'll save
your note and get back to you should I have questions. Thanks again for your

I've read all the notes in this series with a lot of interest – I have a
Mitsumi drive which works fine under DOS, but I experience the same "incorrect
DOS Version" problem with MSCDEX which is described here. I tried the method of
creating a disk image and this worked, but only in as far as you use the files
included in the image – I can't get write access to the rest of the disk. I
even tried
zapping the MSCDEX code but with no success. I know that the OS/2 supported
(SCSI) CD-ROMs automatically get MSCDEX (ISO and Hi-sierra compatible) support
from OS/2 2.1 without having MSCDEX loaded in the DOS session, however, like a
lot of people, my CD-ROM has its own card and drivers – ie non-SCSI. The driver
for the card loads without problems when you start a DOS session, but access to
the drive is not possible without MSCDEX.
I am very interested if you say there is new setting which eliminates the need
for MSCDEX but are you sure this is not the inbuilt IBM support for only SCSI
CDROMs ?
