#A1200 VIDEOUTPUT HELP!

Hi all.
I've recently purchased an A1200. My question is very simple: Will both the
standard and specific-multiscan mode resolutions work with my NEC 4FG
(obviously using a 15 to 23 pin adapter?). The problem is that the NEC 4FG
can't sync down to 15khz, so as the adapter WAS NOT present with the a1200, I
asked a friend which had one that came with his 3000. I connected it and yet it
didn't seem to work. DO I have to use a SPECIAL 15 to 23 pin adapter?
Any help would be appreciated.

NB: In the MULTISCAN modes, I see just fine in the 4fg. Shouldn't the adapter
convert the 15khz video output to a 31khz video output?
Nope, the adapter wont help get the 15.75 modes, and the 4FG can't sync
down that far.
The adapter is just a cable adapter, not a scan converter.

The 1200 initially boots up at 15.75kHz which will not display on you
NEC 4G. You could set the machine up with a TV attached and then change
the monitor settings to work with your NEC. The adapter does not change
the signal frequency. It only changes the connector type. The display
should be quite excellant on the NEC 4G.

Yes, that's EXACTLY what I did and obviously it worked. But the problem is that
by doing that I don't change ANYTHING but the WB configuration! I mean, I'm not
able to do ANYTHING that uses standard amiga resolutions! Any game or utility
that switches to a 15,75khz res drives the 4fg crazy! So, what I really NEED
and I don't even know if it EXISTS is a scan converter! Or I'm FORCED to take
back the machine where it came from, because right now I can't afford a 1960
monitor! Does anyone know where I could find such an adapter? Basically it
would transform this port into an a3000 31khz port.

If you had regular slots in your machine you could get such a converter
which is known as a "scan doubler". The Flicker Fixer was the first and
others are available such as the Commodore A2320 and the ICD FFV. The
problem is that they only work in pre-AGA video modes. I cannot think of a
good/cheap solution. Although the monitor you have is an excellant one it
was probably not the best choice for you.
Games that must boot from their own disk would be a real problem. Other
programs can have their 15.75kHz video "promoted" to 31kHz by the "Mode
Promotion" feature in the IControl directory. I use this feature with my
4000 although I have an older NEC 3D that syncs down to 15.75kHz.

Well, I found that my father still had my "old" NEC 3d in the office so… here
I am. The display is just great. Thanks for your help. (Boy, my desk sure will
fall one day, the weight of the 4fg was already enough! :)) Two monitors is
definetly the best choice.

I'm glad to hear you got it working right. The 3D will handle anything the
1200 can dish out.

Do you have mode promotion turned on? That will fixed most things so
they can be displyed on you FG — It wont fix all, but about 95% of my
stuff gets mode promoted. (the othe 5% are about half my games and all
demos.)

(nec 3d) and everything works just fine.

I agree totally! I love my 1200!
I can't wait till C= comes out with that new cheaper quadsync monitor.
It'll let us get all the modes on our 1200, at a decent price. (I have a
VGA, and a composite monitor hooked in instead, but I want to use only 1
monitor.)

Well, the NEC 3d really does the job, you can get some *cheap* ones now,
because with the new generation of "fg's" the price dropped down. Anyway, if
you plan to use a single monitor for two computers you really should check
which is the best! If you read the previous messages you'll find out I wanted
to use the 4fg with both my PC and 1200 (impossible thing to do!). I don't
really know anything about the Quadsync… What is it?

The Quadsync is supposed to be a cheaper monitor that C= is going to sell,
that'll do all the Amiga modes, and for not much dollars than a standard
VGA ($300-$400) range.
I use my 1200 almost all of the time with a cheap VGA monitor, and then I
have a composite monitor hooked up for anything odd.

I was under the impression that the 1960 is a trisync monitor, and that it
was capable of displaying all the Amiga modes. If a quad sync will do ALL
the Amiga modes, which one is left off the 1960?

The adaptor does nothing but allow you to connect it to the 23 pin port.
In order to see all of the video modes you must have a monitor that can
sink to 15.5khz.
At this time there is no product that will modify the signal and make it
31khz.
