I was looking through an old message thread from GEnie reagrding AMAX and
came across the following message… thought it might help you with your
AMAX/modem problem…

at 19:04 CDT Here is a trick for using USR 9600 modems with the
amax program. startup your amiga modem and then when it's up and running
type "AT&H3 <rtn> AT&R1<rtn>
…Then exit the amiga term program and bootup amax and ge into whatever
term mac program you have. I presently use Zterm with zmodem and the modem
works 100%. lots better than trying cables from the serial port. Hope this
helps someone else with this probelm.

Well I visited the Practical Peripherals forum and caught a message that
had some settings to try with a MAC and the 9600 modem I have. I tried it
and it worked! I didn't even have to ask the question. I still get garbage
when I switch to 7E1 but it works great with 8N1 so I'm not complaining.

I should have known better. Here is what I did to get my PP9600SA modem to
work with Amax. I added &K4 S95=44 to my initialization string.
The S95=44 didn't really matter much but it does give me some neat
information about the connection made.
The &K4 is the real trick. It enables XON/XOFF software local flow
control. Apparantely the MAC doesn't like the modem doing the work. The
software should handle the local flow control.

Donovan, I had the same problem as you when using my Practical Periphals
9600 modem with Mac software on Amax II. What were the settings that
allowed it to work for you?

Read my message to Michael for the details but I added &K4 to my
initialization string. Try that and see if it helps. Put &F before that
too just for good measure. Also S95=44 gives some neat connect
information.
How is the speaker holding out on your modem? I had to replace my first
speaker because it broke and always came out loud. Now my second speaker
did the same thing. I don't know about the parts they use at PP. At least
its got a 5 year warranty.

Donovan, I'll try out your suggestions on changes to the initialization
string. As for the speaker, I haven't noticed any problems with it. I've
had it for about six or seven months.
