I don't have ROMS and I don't have a drive. I did notice that someone had
jumped in to my posting that had those items. My posting was a brand new,
under warranty, Amax II+. $250

sorry for the confusion…I bought the A-Max via mailorder and the ROMs and
disk drive used locally…Since I'm using the A1000 and don't need a zillion
fonts, I'm looking for some advice as to which release of the Mac Operating
System would be enough for my system (which will basically be a B/W Mac Plus).

I'm the one who had jumped in with the AMAX ROMs and drive. Sorry, I had
misunderstood your request.
If you are running on an A1000, I assume that you are floppy based. If you are
fortunate enough to have an A1000 HD that AMAX supports, your choice of system
is going to depend on how much RAM you have. If you have 2MB or better, I
would recomment System 7 (4MB or better if you want to multitask).
If you are floppy based, you need to consider how much of the system you can
fit on a floppy. I find System 6.0.3 to be very compatible with AMAX and it
lets me put enough on a floppy to be usefull. System 6.0.5 should be about
equialent. I wouldn't go any earlier though.

Thanks for the info….I have a Xetec harddrive and 2.5 MB of RAM so I guess I
could use the 7.0 system by your reckoning. A Mac friend told me that the 7.0
system has lots of space dedicated to fonts and color stuff that I don't care
about and/or can't use anyway. That's why I was looking for an earlier and
smaller release that's more appropriate to the Mac + era system I'll be
emulating.
I guess I'll start out with 6-something and work my way up if I find I need it.
One of my objectives in getting the A-Max at all was that I'm thinking that
CD-ROM stuff might be more compatible/available if I access it through A-Max
rather than through Amiga. Is that correct – that is, will Mac CD-ROMs work
with my A1000/A-Max?
Check out my articles on Cd-ROM in the March and August 1992 AmigaWorld. Some
Mac CDs (or PC CDs, for that matter) contain driver programs that must run on
those computers… other discs are pure data that might be able to be loaded
into many Amiga programs.
You need at least AMAX II for HD support. AMAX 1 won't cut it. The question
is, is there an AMAX II driver for your Xetec harddrive? The AmigaDOS driver
won't work.
Assuming that there is an AMAX II driver for your hardware, and your hardware
is SCSI, you MAY (no guarantees as I understand it) be able to access SCSI\
CDROM devices through AMAX.
If any one out there has better info, please correct me on this.

I use AMAX II+ with a GVP scsi card and under AMAX, I use the INIT and
desk accessories that came with the CD to access it. It works great! I
also use the CD on my Amiga using AsimCDFS.
