For those of you interested in "rolling your own" CD-ROM apps… You *can* use Paradox Runtime to ship a CD-ROM application! After about three weeks of fiddeling around with the problem, I now have Runtime 4.0 working reliably with a small-to-medium size database…400,000 Master Records, and 800,000 detail records. The whole shebang weighed in at 133 Megabytes…light by CD-ROM standards, but heavy lifting for your garden-variety IDE. Performance is okay…it gets to records via the Key Field in about five seconds, and takes about 20 seconds to find something via a secondary index. The principal advantage to Paradox Runtime is cost: you get an unlimited distribution license for $250.00 The principal *dis*advantage is that you better know the Paradox Application Language. Also, you do without the nicities found in authoring packages like KAware…CD-ROM simulation, for instance, and the ability to precisely locate files before premastering. But OTOH, you don't have to fork out gobs of title-and-disk license fees, either. And for Computer Output Laser Disk apps, considering the alternative, (printouts, COM microfiche, etc), I assure you, the users won't care about a few extra seconds!
